On measures taken to recover from the consequences of the accident on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant

25.04.2026

On 26 April 1986, an accident occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the 40th anniversary of which is being marked this year.

The consequences of the accident affected 23% of Belarus’s territory and around 2.5 million people.
Since then, numerous efforts have been made by the state and society to restore the health of those affected and to ensure the recovery and socio-economic development of the affected areas of Belarus.

The measures under the six state programmes implemented in the affected regions aimed at creating living conditions that minimise the impact of the negative consequences of radioactive contamination.

Significant results have been achieved in reducing contamination levels (photo 1) and comprehensive all-level work continues to be taken to monitor radiation levels (photo 2). Comprehensive measures for infrastructure development in the areas affected by the accident are planned for 2026–2030 (photo 3).

Issues relating to the livelihoods of people in the affected areas remain a constant focus of attention for the legislative and executive authorities, and the President of the Republic of Belarus.
